Given the pub’s name, it would be odd if The Brown Dog did not welcome canines, albeit that the resident dog is black. The pub also welcomes children, which is perhaps surprising given its location in the exclusive back streets of Barnes and the gastro nature of its operation. St Austell Tribute and rotating guest ales and Orchard Pig cider testify to its drinking credentials, along with a wine list designed to match an enticing menu. Here you’ll find oysters among the starters, main courses boasting Tamworth pork or aged Scottish beef, and traditional sweets such as apple and rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice cream. A granite-slabbed terrace furnished with bench tables and parasols completes this altogether rather pleasant establishment.
