Dating from 1746 when drunkenness and debauchery were rife in the area, this historic tavern once offered a straw-lined back room where inebriated customers could sleep things off until the morning after the night before. Nowadays, early morning visitors can enjoy full English breakfasts, with croissants and baguettes from its own bakery. Drinks-wise, holding court are traditional ales from Adnams, Aspall cider and an impressive wine list with 450 choices from around the globe. Downstairs in the wood-panelled restaurant you’ll find dishes such as rabbit and ham hock terrine, apple and raisin chutney and honey mustard dressing; crispy-fried Cornish squid, red chilli, coriander and lime; fillet of hake with tenderstem broccoli, fennel and brown shrimps; and slow-cooked Suffolk lamb shank, spinach, tomato and rosemary jus. Desserts include treacle tart with whisky Jersey cream; or passionfruit cheesecake.
