Rory McLean and Samantha Laye successfully run this character pub with its log-burning fires and cosy snug. Between Rugby and Lutterworth, in the pretty village of Shawell, the pub is just a few minutes from the M1, making it a perfect place to stop for a pint of local Dow Bridge Gladiator ale or Aspall cider. Chef Rory used to cook in some of London’s most notable restaurants and his modern British food is worth a detour. A starter of game Scotch egg, celeriac remoulade and soused vegetables might precede curried monkfish, spiced red lentils, coconut and coriander. Finish with rhubarb Bakewell tart and cardamom pannacotta or a plate of four cheeses. The fixed-price lunch menu might feature fishcake with asparagus, poached egg and hollandaise or beer-battered haddock, chips, peas and tartare sauce.
