A rambling, creeper dressed stone inn (it was a quarrymen’s watering hole 200 years ago) that has a comfortably traditional bar and ‘The Mess’ dining area based on RAF connections. Charnwood Forest’s stirring countryside is all around and the Great Central Railway (steam) is close-by. Explorers may choose to sit in the flowery courtyard garden, indulging in Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter and select from an ever-changing menu, perhaps haddock in beer batter with mushy peas, fries and home-made tartare sauce; the always popular Woodhouse smokies; and the Wheatsheaf burger. There’s a decent list of wines to accompany.
