High in the West Pennine Moors is this appealing old stone pub situated in a tiny fold of mill-workers' cottages. There’s an engaging hotchpotch of furnishings in the fire-warmed, flagstoned and beamed rooms together with fascinating old photos of the local villages in their mill-town heyday. Take a glass of ale out to tables on the lawn and study the regularly changing menu of home-cooked goodies, such as lamb kleftico, and braised steak in red wine. There are walks from the door – drop into Roddlesworth Woods or you can climb to the imposing Jubilee Tower on nearby Darwen Hill.
