Although very much Lancastrian, this traditional country inn is only minutes away from the Cumbria border. With its nooks and crannies, old beams and uneven floors, this family-run dog-friendly inn stands next to Tewitfield Locks on the Lancaster Canal. The bar, with Tirril ales on tap, rocks to live bands on Mondays while hungry music lovers consume plates of stone-baked pizzas and pasta. Otherwise look to the restaurant for good country cooking and local produce, twice-baked Garstang Blue cheese soufflé; smoked salmon and crayfish terrine; pan-seared sea bass, spiced Morecambe Bay shrimp butter, falafel and roasted cauliflower; Cumberland pork sausages, bubble-and-squeak, with OSB ale, sage and onion gravy. Children are well catered for too.
