This thriving village inn is set in the tranquil valley of the River Douglas and close to some lovely rambles on Parbold Hill. A pub that caters admirably for all-comers, the emphasis is on high-quality modern cooking using locally sourced seasonal produce. On the restaurant menu Morecambe Bay brown shrimps with tarragon butter, asparagus and toasted brioche is a typical opening gambit. Progress to pan-fried Goosnargh duck breast, pink fir potatoes, chantenay carrots and Griottine jus; or roasted butternut squash and sage risotto with amaretto and parmesan cheese. The bar menu is equally appealing; perhaps steak, ale and mushroom pie, mushy peas and triple-cooked chips. The traditionally styled pub is a popular village local, with an ever-changing array of beers from local microbreweries and farmhouse ciders, while the annual Early May Bank Holiday beer festival attracts up to 2,000 people to a huge marquee.
