Overlooking Westerham’s pretty green, the more-than-800-year-old Grasshopper takes its name from the arms of local merchant Thomas Gresham, founder of London’s Royal Exchange in 1565. The bar’s low-beamed ceilings, hung with antique jugs, and its winter log fire are particularly appealing, as are Westerham brewery’s Grasshopper and British Bulldog real ales. House specials include home-made steak and ale pie and the ‘Winston Whopper’ home-made burger, while regular cast members include grilled fresh tuna, lemon butter and capers; and slow-roasted lamb shank with red wine and rosemary jus. Ask long-term hosts Neale and Anne Sadlier for directions to Chartwell (NT), Sir Winston Churchill’s former home.
