The small beamed rooms, one with an old bake-oven, conjure up images of how this country inn might have looked when it was built in 1595. The new owners offer several real ales, 12 wines by the glass and a menu featuring grilled Cornish mackerel; truffled mac 'n' cheese; hand-carved English ham; and onglet steak from Lancashire. Toasties and wholetail scampi are lunchtime favourites. A courtyard garden has now opened and there are tables on the forecourt.
