Experience pub landlords, Pete and Jess Tatlow, who both grew up in this area, bought this unloved 17th-century, former coaching inn at auction and then renovated it. Their hard work has clearly paid off as their pub has gained a good reputation. Jess changes her menu every month, but popular dishes are brought back time and time again. A staple, and big favourite, is the 'smokey', flaked smoked haddock topped with tomato concasse, which comes as both a starter or a main. Also dual purpose, and appearing on a sample monthly menu are tiger prawn kedgeree; salad of baba ghanoush; and pan-fried lamb and bulgur wheat patties. Mains include roast breast of chicken on creamy champ with whisky and mushroom cream sauce; mince of the week (see the specials board); and sirloin and fillet steaks. A separate menu lists vegetarian and vegan dishes. Pete selects the perfect real ales and craft beers as company for the much-loved Adnams Southwold. The monthly tapas night is a popular fixture on the last Wednesday of each month, and a beer festival is held in May. The pub has a safe garden at the back with patio tables and chairs plus children’s play equipment.
