This higgledy-piggledy marvel is one of the stars of Ledbury’s extensive suite of amazing half-timbered buildings. Parts of it date back to 1550; the interior of the coaching inn oozes the character of great age, with fine beams and panelling in the refined dining room. Holes caused by musket shot fired during a Civil War skirmish are just another quirky talking point of the gabled building, where Wadworth’s beers slake the thirst of ramblers fresh from the challenging local countryside. Indulge in starters like baked mushroom with goats' cheese and caramelised red onion chutney; or chicken liver parfait with crostini and plum and apple chutney; follow with Somerset brie and beetroot tart; honey-glazed ham with eggs, tomatoes and chips; or confit pork belly with bubble-and-squeak and black pudding. If the weather permits, sit in the sun-trap courtyard garden.
