After hours spent browsing in nearby Hay-on-Wye, the ‘Town of Books’, a 10-minute drive will get you to this family-run, 16th-century former coach house. The interior is furnished with elegantly modern tables and chairs, although a reminder of the pub’s long life is the glass-covered, 39ft-deep well. Home-cooked, locally-sourced food served all day includes roast half-duck with orange sauce; pan-fried liver and crispy bacon; tagliatelle carbonara; wholetail scampi; and lots of grills. Wednesday is curry night and traditional roasts are served on Sundays. Doom Bar and Butty Bach will be found in the bar.
