In the beautiful countryside of the Meon Valley, the setting for this delightful 15th-century coaching inn is hard to beat. The village boasts a magnificent Norman church where tapestry designs similar to Bayeux can be found. If you want heavy beams, inglenook fireplaces and wooden floors, look no further – they’re all here, creating an ideal atmosphere for enjoy a pint of Badger Best Bitter or Westons cider. The kitchen team make everything in house for their monthly-changing menus (except the ice cream which is made on a local farm) – so expect dishes such as salt and pepper squid; potato skin and leek soup, poached egg and parmesan crisp; Casterbridge 28-day aged rib-eye steak with triple-cooked chips; and roasted cod loin with pea, chorizo and mint risotto. There are tables outside on the pretty patio.
