The Sun has stood for many years alongside the main coaching route from London to Exeter, today’s A30. Passing traffic is not a problem since most West Country travellers now use the M3, accessible from nearby junction 7. Moondance from Triple fff takes pole position in the bar, while in the restaurant the young chef’s well-conceived menu might list monkfish wrapped in parma ham with fennel and pea and tomato concasse; or lamb loin and faggot with roasted carrots, apricot, spinach and crushed new potatoes. Also on offer are pub classics like battered cod and triple-cooked chips, or burger with Welsh rarebit. A lovely garden lies at the back.
