This pub on the edge of Canada Common in the New Forest (under new ownership) is going from strength to strength. Its 1840 origin is still evident from the outside, although the pleasingly modernised interior today retains few clues. No worries if you’ve been out and about in the forest with your dog, as he or she is more than welcome to accompany you inside and even be treated with one of the dog biscuits kept in a jar on the bar. The pub sources food from local suppliers and serves comforting home-cooked food along with New Forest real ales. You could just choose a warming cup of home-made soup, a simple sandwich and skinny fries, or opt for three courses – cold smoked trout, crostini and wasabi mayonnaise; chef’s pie of the day, creamy mash and seasonal greens; and caramelised lemon tart, raspberry sorbet and clotted cream. There also a gluten-free menu. Please note, booking is essential for coach parties.
