Just outside Basingstoke is the picturesque village of Old Basing, in the heart of which is The Crown. Reliable and popular national ales are backed by a good wine list. Here, they take great pride in the fact that every dish is prepared from scratch in the pub’s kitchen. Food takes the form of bar snacks like filled rolls, salads and deli boards, and on the main menu, a typical choice could be a starter of crispy breaded Tunworth cheese with Doom Bar chutney, followed by crisp belly of lamb with cauliflower purée and spiced lentils. Lemon posset or warm coffee and walnut sponge both make for a delicious finale.
