This gem of a 16th-century pub has an abundance of traditional English character and atmosphere. Old tankards hang from the low-beamed ceilings in the two bar areas, and a large open fire is the central focus through the winter months. Hall & Woodhouse beers, such as Pickled Partridge and Chestnut Horse Special, along with Westons ciders, can be enjoyed in the bar or the garden. A typical menu starts with goats' cheese open ravioli with fig purée, rocket salad and balsamic dressing; or herrings à la Baltique; then continues with seafood broth with crusty bread; or herb-crusted rack of lamb with olive tapenade and sweetbreads. Walnut sticky toffee pudding, or apple and rhubarb crumble round things off nicely.
