Nathaniel and Vanessa Clift have taken over the reins of The Black Horse, a traditional 17th-century former coaching inn. It’s a proper village community pub, with a skittle alley, regular quiz nights and an oak-beamed bar where locals sup pints of Butcombe, Fuller's and Red Cat ales by the fire, or wherever they like. On the menu: baguettes and jacket potatoes; hand-made game pie; scampi, chips and peas; sea bass fillets with lemon and caper butter; chicken tikka with onion bhajis, omelette and basmati rice; and Hunter's chicken and vegetable lattice. Sunday roasts are good value. Well-behaved children and dogs welcome, and muddy boots ignored.
