Traditional pub with the emphasis firmly on local ales

At a glance

Bar menu
Open all year

This old fashioned whitewashed pub in the ancient capital of Wessex is a decidedly beer-led hostelry. As well as three regular regional ales from the Cheriton, Alfred's and Hop Back breweries, The Black Boy offers two Hampshire guests, perhaps from Bowman or Itchen Valley; a small selection of good wine is also available. The interior features old wooden tables and a quirky decor with all manner of objects hanging from the ceiling, while the short daily menu on the blackboard could include sandwiches, home-made burgers and fish and chips. There is a sheltered garden with patio heaters.
