The ancient walls of Calleva Atrebatum, known today as Silchester Roman City, are some of the best preserved in Britain. The ruins are not far away from this 19th-century Fuller's pub overlooking the common and cricket pitch. Two bar areas, with a log-burner in the middle, lead to a pleasant conservatory and pretty garden. A full lunch and evening menu includes baguettes and baked jacket potatoes; home-made steak and ale pie; ham, double egg and chips; fish of the day; and goats' cheese and tomato tart. Daily specials broaden the choice.
