Redevelopment has swept away much of old Salford. Fortunately this striking street-corner edifice survives intact amidst the concrete, steel and glass, across the River Irwell from Manchester’s gleaming centre. It’s a grass-roots venue renowned for arts, festivals and creative exhibitions. The change of management is currently building on the King’s unique appeal – musical and theatrical performers continue almost non-stop in the busy function room, refreshed by the bar’s six guest ales and two draught ciders – celebrated with a festival in September. A major introduction is Aunty Hilda’s Kitchen, which serves a short list of home-made favourites from tea-time to supper between Wednesday and Saturday.
