Dating back in part to the 16th century, this former coaching inn on the outskirts of Bristol enjoys a fine hilltop setting with views of the Bristol Channel. The daily menu might kick off with lamb koftas with minted yogurt, and you could follow that with a steak – perhaps an 8oz ribeye, or 12oz rump – or maybe confit belly pork, fondant potato, crackling, beetroot and blue cheese emulsion, a fish finger bun, or hake fillet with squid ink pasta. Finish with lemon posset or chocolate brownie. The pub holds a beer and cider festival in July.
