Dating back in part to the 16th century, this former coaching inn on the outskirts of Bristol enjoys a fine hilltop setting with views of the Bristol Channel. The daily menu might kick off with lamb shank terrine, Mediterranean vegetables, quince, and apple purée, and you could follow that with a steak – perhaps an 8oz miso-marinated onglet, or an 8oz sirloin – or maybe confit of duck leg with pea and pancetta risotto, a classic ploughman’s, or whole plaice with caper butter and crushed new potatoes. Finish with strawberry Eton mess or chocolate pot. The pub holds a beer and cider festival in July.
