Locals Nick and Laura Avery successfully run the 17th-century Plough that is full of period charm – Cotswold flagstones, oak beams and a big open fire make it look very smart indeed. Rotating real ales, such as local Stroud Budding, are served from casks, and there are real ciders, too. Try devilled lamb's kidneys on toast; followed by Gloucester Old Spots sausages, mash and onion gravy; or beer-battered haddock, chips and crushed peas; then custard tart, nutmeg and fresh summer berries. A charcoal oven cooks perfect steaks and fish.
