AA Pick of the Pubs

Beer festival

This classic 18th-century free house is a real ale champion, so it’s worth a visit to savour the tip-top brews on hand pump. The pub sits smack on the Cotswold Way, and is formed from three terraced farm cottages known as ‘pig row’. Ale festivals are held in May and October; the one in May also showcases ciders, and fans of fermented apple juice enjoy the weekly alternating choice at the bar. Devoid of modern-day intrusions, the rustic and traditional low-beamed bars are havens of peace, with just the comforting sound of crackling log fires and the hubbub of chatting locals filling the rambling little rooms. Wholesome and home-made fodder ranges from doorstep sandwiches – the soft brie and smoked back bacon is served with cranberry sauce – to grazing planks and home-made puds.
