The beautiful Cotswold-stone building, stable courtyard and orchard date back to the 15th century but plenty of historical features remain. This former blacksmith's has changed hands many times since J Hathaway opened it as an inn in 1856 but a warm welcome, a good selection of accredited ales such as Hook Norton and quality food remain its hallmarks. The appetising menu might include ham hock and chicken terrine; and Asian-marinated beef short ribs. Classics such as steak and red wine pie; and Gloucester Old Spots sausages and mash satisfy more traditional tastes.
