After driving past this property for some time, award-winning chef Daniel Clifford could see its potential, so when the ‘for sale’ sign went up he bought it. Many of the staff who formerly worked at his five AA-Rosette Midsummer House in Cambridge, can now be found here. Little Dunmow is where Flitch Trials originated, a flitch being a side of bacon awarded to couples who could swear to not regretting their marriage for a year and a day. The trials are now held in Great Dunmow every four years, but you can visit this rejuvenated village pub as often as you like, whether just to sample Bishop Nick real ales or Jake's Orchard nettle cider, or to eat. On chef-patron Danny Gill’s menus – a starter of beetroots baked on open coals with golden beetroot marmalade, hazelnut shortbread and goats' cheese; or there's the more familiar chicken and duck liver parfait with quince and toasted brioche. Mains include slow-roasted loin of venison, celeriac and elderberries; and beer-battered pollack, chips and mushy peas. Then, to follow, pistachio soufflé with coconut rice pudding, passionfruit and mango perhaps. There’s a kitchen table, for two, positioned just beside the pass.
