There's been a dining inn on this site close to the Royal Mile and the Scottish National Gallery since at least 1823. As such it's the oldest food-inn in Edinburgh, and it proudly continues to offer top-quality Scottish sourced produce. The building may be 400 years old and is apparently named from an old language once spoken in north east Scotland, mainly Aberdeenshire. Award-winning Scottish beers are the mainstay here, including brews from Caledonian and micros like Cairngorm, while real whisky-cask cider comes from Dunbar. Public rooms include a ground-floor bar, and a wine bar and bistro upstairs. In these pleasantly informal surroundings, a wide choice of fresh, locally sourced food is prepared by the chefs on site. Favourite starters include Cullen skink; local mussels; and haggis bon bons. Mains could be grilled veal T-bone; crab risotto; home-made shepherd’s pie; or baked vegetable gratin. Seafood is delivered fresh each morning; look for hake fillet with chervil crushed potatoes.
