This inn was named after the local charcoal-burners, or the soot-caked ‘blackboys’, with whom the 14th-century pub was once a favourite. Today’s well-scrubbed visitors enjoy beers from Harvey's of Lewes in one of two bars, and in the restaurant, vegetables from the garden, game from local shoots, and fish from Rye and Hastings. Typical dishes include pork Stroganoff with linguine; chicken, mushroom and leek pie; and bouillabaisse. Outside are rambling grounds with resident ducks and an orchard. There are quiz nights and open mic nights.
