Smart inn serving quality food and ales

At a glance

AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu

James and Kate Mackenzie’s transformation of this part 15th- and part 17th-century inn has helped earn it two AA Rosettes, but it still retains the village pub feel, with Copper Dragon, Scarborough, Great Yorkshire and other local ales, and Moorlands Farm cider all served in the bar. The restaurant is more contemporary in style and the conservatory looks out over the garden. James sources top-notch local and seasonal produce for a range of modern British menus, including one for vegetarians; here you’ll find dishes such as pea and mint ravioli with nettle and mint dressing. The dinner menu may proffer fillet of beef, pickled red onion and watercress salad, ox tongue fritter, horseradish hollandaise and chips. Finish with sticky toffee pudding, stout ice cream and walnut brittle. The pub occupies the site of the original gatehouse to Dalton Hall, family seat of Lord Hotham.
