Extravagant views, craft ciders and seasonal produce
At a glance
Situated beside National Trust woodlands in a corner of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the old inn’s garden commands an extraordinary view across Somerset from the eponymous gap in the sinuous chalk hills. The two counties provide the wherewithal for the August cider festival here, whilst beers from Exmoor and Otter breweries anoint the bar, with its solid rustic seating and tables and a log-burner for the winter nip. The impressive 'Ultimate Ploughman’s' takes in the cheeses of the area, or enjoy twice-baked Red Leicester soufflé with tarragon crème fraîche, then pan-fried sea bass fillets with new potatoes, samphire and clam chowder. Leave space for cider mulled plum frangipane tart, or lime and ginger crunch.
