Jane Gould searched long and hard for somewhere she could realise her vision of a traditional English country pub. Since finding this 17th-century, former coaching inn she has skilfully transformed it into a must-visit destination in Cranborne Chase, nearly 400-square miles of rolling chalk downland. Badger Best shares bar space with Dorset and Somerset ciders. Choose a table near one of the wood-burning stoves for something hearty from the daily-changing menu, such as roast local venison with celeriac three ways and juniper jus; home-cured peppered duck with poached baby pear and blackberries; or spelt and barley risotto with roasted squash, toasted pumpkin seeds and Old Winchester cheese crisp.
