Rescued by a village collective, the Anchor is now home to the Magrath family. ‘Our landlords are our neighbours,’ they point out ‘it doesn’t get much more independent than that!’ And this independence pays off, with all their produce sourced from within a 20-mile radius of the village. For lunch you could go for the venison burger, or the house ham, egg and chips; they also do filled baguettes and chips. At dinner, start with smoked duck breast, pomegranate seed and hazelnut salad before moving on to braised and roasted beef brisket with confit cabbage mash, truffle butter and caramelised onions; or salt and vinegar batter cod fillet.
