Surrounded by landscaped gardens and leafy woodland paths, the White Hart is part of the splendid 14th-century Dartington Hall, home of a famous arts trust. Ancient tapestries, open fires, flagstones, Gothic chandeliers and limed oak settles characterise the interior. Devonshire and Cornish real ales and Dartington’s own cider are available in the bar; outside there’s a patio. Starters on Anuj Thakur’s menu include line-caught mackerel escabeche; Exmouth mussels; and Vulscombe goats’ cheese. Further local sourcing is evident from mains such as Devon lamb rump with polenta, charred courgette and gazpacho fondue; Salcombe and Dartmouth-reared pork with salsify, ham hock bon bon and toasted-nut muesli; and roasted butternut with wild mushrooms and Sharpham cheese. Desserts are few, but delicious nonetheless – chocolate mousse with Cointreau sorbet; glazed lemon tart with clotted cream; roast pineapple with Breton sablé biscuit; and sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb ice cream. Curries are served every Thursday night.
