This 16th-century coaching inn on the borders of Devon, Dorset and Somerset still retains plenty of original features, including beamed ceilings and huge fires, which make for a lovely setting if you are popping in for a pint of Branoc ale, or making a beeline for the daily-changing menu. Local produce drives the menu, whether it’s tenderloin of pork with caramelised apple, white onion purée, charred baby leeks, fondant potato and black pudding; or fillet of gurnard with smoked salmon and pea hash, horseradish cream and poached egg. If there's room, have a go at lemon posset or steamed ginger pudding.
