Close to the village green in this village of cob and thatch cottages, guests in the tree-shaded beer garden here can enjoy views across to the distant moors of northern Dartmoor. It was from this pub one day in 1802 that Thomas Cobley and his companions set forth for Widecombe Fair, an event immortalised in song; his cottage still stands in the village. The inn's unspoilt main bar has a roaring log fire, cushioned settles, and benefits from a stillage where an impressive selection of casks of Devon microbrewery beers are always on tap. Being a firmly traditional Devon pub, there are draught ciders here too, all served from the unusual thatched bar. Time-honoured hearty English fare is the mainstay of the menus, and there's a particularly strong suite of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Mushroom, brie and cranberry Wellington; duck and cherry pie; or steak and kidney suet pudding give a flavour of the home-cooked dishes here.
