Delightful Devon longhouse offering classic pub meals

At a glance

Bar menu
Beer festival
Open all year
Dog friendly
Free Wi-Fi

This thatched Devon longhouse dates from 1650, when it was a staging house for changing post horses, and stands beside the A35 just west of Axminster. Weary travellers will find a cosy, beamed interior with a relaxed atmosphere, crackling log fires, and a fine range of local ales on tap. Order a pint of Otter or Thatchers Gold to accompany a traditional pub meal, perhaps a baked aubergine with Mediterranean vegetables and sweet potato, topped with a three-cheese crust; or a jacket potato with a choice of toppings. The south-facing garden is the venue for the Spring Bank Holiday beer festival in late May.
