Dating from the late 18th century, when the village farrier and wheelwright worked in the cobbled courtyard, this oak-beamed Grade II listed pub is run by Harriet and Mike Daly who welcome all comers, including dogs on leads in the bar and the walled beer garden. Polished slate tiles surround a bar serving ales from the likes of Otter and the Exeter Brewery, Sandford Orchards ciders from Crediton, and wines from Sharpham near Totnes. A smallholding behind the pub supplies vegetables, fruits and herbs for dishes on the short, daily changing menus. These offer starters such as rolled ham hock, spinach and grain mustard roulade, homemade chutney, and walnut toast; and mains of deep-fried herbed skate wings, cubed roast potatoes and tartare dressing.
