Named after a local landowner, this 19th-century pub retains the charms of yesteryear with wooden tables, flagstone floors and beamed ceilings. Open fires burn in winter, warming the informal and candlelit interior where a range of local ales is served. Expect popular home-made fare: Welsh rarebit; creamy garlic mushrooms; slow-cooked lamb shank, creamy mash, seasonal vegetables; trio of Yarde Farm pork sausages; and chicken and vegetable tikka masala. The quiet and comfortable cottage garden is a great place to eat if you’re visiting this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on a fine day.
