Located in an idyllic Devon valley, this beautifully restored 13th-century flour mill has a unique appeal among pubs close to the beaches on the English Riviera and the wilderness of Dartmoor. Sitting beside the cosy log fire or watching the trickle of the stream in the tree-shaded garden, it’s hard to believe this tranquil setting is only a short hop from the tourist-filled resort of Torquay. Sticking to local suppliers, Torbay’s Bays Brewery ales appear on the pumps and Devon produce dominates the menu. Start with seared scallops, cauliflower purée, prosciutto crumb and lemon oil, followed by beef and ale pie, mashed potato and red wine gravy.
