Up in the High Peak, below the windswept plateau of Kinder Scout, the hotel dates from 1755. Its period charm still very evident, one place to relax with a pint of Thwaites Original or Howard Town Twenty Trees is the oak-panelled, log-fired bar. Others are the Cricket Room, popular with the local cricket team, whose ground is next door, and the Ramblers Bar which has hiking boots strung along the beams. Perhaps start with creamy garlic mushrooms on toasted ciabatta, followed by chicken satay skewers with sticky rice and prawn crackers. There’s also a sandwich menu and Sunday roasts, including a vegetarian option, are a speciality. Meals can be served on the patio overlooking the moorland.
