Ashover was the scene of a confrontation between Cavaliers and Roundheads during the English Civil War; a sign on the front wall of this 14th-century pub tells of its bit-part role in the skirmish. Jennings delivers its real ales from Cumbria, Brakspear from Oxfordshire, and Marston’s from Burton upon Trent. There’s plenty of good pub food to be had, including jacket potatoes; home-made lasagne and chips. Other options are speciality sausages, and dishes suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
