Set in a tiny mill village at the edge of the Kinder Scout moors and below the shapely Lantern Pike hill, site of an Armada beacon, the sublime views from the beer garden of the wooded Peak District hills are reason enough to seek out this fine pub. Add a well-considered selection of real ales and an ever-changing menu – perhaps seafood pâté; home-cured peppered mackerel; braised lamb shank, mash, veg with rosemary and red wine jus; chicken linguine; and if you time your visit right, there’ll be new season, de-shelled Whitby crab – and it’s little wonder that this ultra-traditional 170-year-old inn is a highly popular destination for diners and outdoor pursuits enthusiasts alike. Unique Coronation Street ephemera add fascination for the faithful.
