Surrounded by the sublime scenery of the Clwydian hills, this pretty, whitewashed pub is the 'charming and friendly retreat from the world' that owners Lucy Hughes and Jason Stock set out to create. For the modern British food their unshakeable maxim is 'locally sourced', typically extra-mature Welsh steak, roast tomatoes, scrumpy-battered onions and grilled field mushrooms; baked haddock fillet on crushed new potatoes with white wine sauce; and spinach and ricotta tortellini, smoked cheese with wilted baby spinach and wild mushroom sauce. It follows then that real ales, such as Porthmadog's Purple Moose, should come only from local microbreweries.
