In the 17th century, this was a farmhouse and the farmer's wife would feed the labourers; it later became a coaching inn. Today its long history of providing refreshment continues with an intriguing offer from the Skelton family: order a main course and pay just 1p for your starter or dessert. So, having raided the piggy bank, what do your pennies buy? Among the starters are chicken and pork pâté with home-made chutney; and goats' cheese and tomato tart. Main courses include pan-fried minute steak with mushroom, onion, potato and red wine ragout; and home-made fish pie with haddock and prawns, mash and melted cheese. A dessert could be rich warm chocolate fudge cake and cream; or apple crumble and custard. The Old Tap Bar offers Marston's Wainwright, Tirril Queen Jean and Cross Bay Nightfall real ales, as well as Kingstone Press cider.
