Keswick’s oldest coaching inn is a handsome 17th-century building. Restored to its former glory, retaining its traditional black panelling, Elizabethan beams, ancient settles and log fires, it makes a comfortable base from which to explore the fells and lakes. Expect to find local Jennings ales on tap and classic pub food prepared from local ingredients. Typical main dishes could be pumpkin and red onion tagine or local pheasant breast stuffed with Cumberland sausage and wrapped in bacon. There are 12 comfortable bedrooms available.
