The decor at this 1850s inn, in the beautiful and tranquil Winster Valley, has a subtly modern edge. It is virtually self-sufficient: vegetables and free-range meat come from the owners’ surrounding land, and ales are brewed locally. The innovative cooking is a contemporary take on traditional fare and dinner could see a starter of ham hock terrine and home-made piccalilli. Mains range from Lakes Blonde beer-battered haddock, chips and pea purée to curried cod, lentil dhal, light curry sauce and onion bhaji.
