Tucked away in the peaceful Duddon Valley, Wordsworth’s favourite, is this 16th-century cottage-style pub. Hugely popular with walkers and climbers, the slate-floored bar is a welcoming place to enjoy local ales. Served all day, food is hearty and traditional and uses local farm meats; the choice ranges from hot and cold sandwiches, and lunchtime snacks like beer-battered fish and chips, to pie and mash; pasta dishes; and Cumberland sausage. Retreat to the garden in summer and savour cracking southern fells views, or come for the beer festival in October. Special events, live music and quizzes take place throughout the year.
