In a picturesque village named after the Vane-Tempest family of Nynyard, high up the valley, this handsome pub has served the peaceful Tees Valley for over 200 years. Tables out-front overlook the green, and Village Brewer’s White Boar is served in the bar as well as guest ales. Expect roaring fires in winter and a large garden for whiling away a summer evening. The menu changes seasonally with a focus on locally sourced ingredients – hot haggis Scotch egg; and duck terrine to start, then pan-fried hake with leeks, mussels and garlic; beer-battered North Sea cod with chips, tartare sauce and Yorkshire caviar; or perhaps a 16oz Chateaubriand for two to share. There’s a beer festival in the summer.
