In a picturesque village named after the Vane-Tempest family of Nynyard, high up the valley, this handsome pub has served the peaceful Tees Valley for over 200 years. Tables out-front overlook the green, and Village Brewer’s White Boar is served in the bar as well as guest ales. Expect roaring fires in winter and a large garden for whiling away a summer evening. The menu changes seasonally with a focus on locally sourced ingredients – hot haggis Scotch egg; and pork, pistachio and prune terrine to start, then braised venison shank, roast winter veg and wild mushroom jus; beer-battered North Sea cod with chips, tartare sauce and Yorkshire caviar; or perhaps a 32oz côte de boeuf for two to share. There’s a beer festival in June.
