This old stone inn stands on Mickleton's main street, surrounded by the heather-covered moors of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Candlelight and a log-burning stove illuminate the interior, lovingly maintained by the Rowbotham family whom, it's good to report, are enthusiastic supporters of local craft breweries, such as Cumberland, Jarrow and Sonnet 43. The menu might catch your eye with steamed Shetland mussels and bacon and cider cream sauce; broad bean, garden pea and goats’ cheese salad with lemon and mint dressing; twice-cooked Simpson’s Aberdeen Angus beef steak and chunky chips; and strawberry cheesecake and fresh strawberry ice cream. The dog-friendly garden is a real treat.
